Julian Omidi – Co-founder of the Children’s Obesity Fund with his brother Michael Omidi, M.D. to educate parents and children about the rising obesity rates in America.
According to First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative, in the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.
For some families, obesity occurs throughout several generations, adults and children may be overwhelmed. Many have come to believe that obesity is genetic and feel powerless to help the next generation stop it. The Children’s Obesity is here to help. Obesity is not genetic and it can be reversed!
Julian Omidi’s Vision for Children’s Obesity Fund
“Obesity is a consequence of many things, not just overeating,” according to Julian Omidi. “It is caused by a lack of knowledge about nutrition and exercise and the lifestyle balance needed to maintain a healthy weight.”
A recent government study found that only one-in-four adolescents meet the nation’s physical activity guideline of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day. The Omidi brothers, through the Children’s Obesity Fund, want to remind American families that food choices are only part of the reason the country is struggling with an obesity epidemic. Our increasingly sedentary lifestyle is also at fault and needs to be remedied. The Omidi brothers aim to increase awareness and understanding of what it takes to have healthy children and families. The hope is to reverse the hazardous trends that threaten our standard of living and quality of life for generations to come.
